Gynecologic Oncology

Cervical Cancer

Gynaecologic Oncology (cancer) includes cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, cancer of the uterus (womb), vaginal cancer and vulva cancer.

Cervical Cancer

The most common type of cervical cancer is Squamous cell carcinoma which starts in the squamous or skin-like cells that cover the outer surface of the cervix at the top of the vagina.

Adenocarcinoma is a less common type of cervical cancer which starts in cells called glandular cells which are in the cervical canal (a small opening in the cervix which leads into the uterus or womb).

Cervical cancer can be localised to the cervix or it can spread to surrounding structures including lymph nodes around the cervix, within the pelvis or into nearby organs.

Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer is a malignant tumour in one or both the ovaries. The most common type of ovarian cancer is serous papillary; there are other types including endometroid, clear cell and mucinous carcinoma.

Cancer of the Uterus (womb)

Cancer of the uterus is the most common gynaecological cancer. This type of cancer is most commonly found in Australia. Most cancers of the uterus arise in the lining of the uterus (the endometrium). Other uterine cancers can also develop in the muscle layers of the uterus. Most women who are diagnosed with cancer of the uterus have adenocarcinoma; less common cancers of the uterus include adenosquamous carcinoma, papillary serous carcinoma, clear cell carcinoma and uterine sarcoma.

Vaginal Cancer

Vaginal cancer begins in tissue lining in the vagina.

Vulva Cancer

Vulva cancer begins in the vulva skin, including the clitoris, vaginal lips and the opening to the vagina.

Fetomaternal Medicine

Fetal medicine is a branch of medicine that includes the assessment of fetal growth and wellbeing, the maintenance of fetal health and the diagnosis of fetal illnesses and abnormalities.

As prenatal diagnosis has improved, so is our capability to diagnose problems before birth. Therefore, the fetus is increasingly becoming an independent individual, and fetal medicine is the specialty that addresses this “unborn patient.”

Fetal medicine is a relatively new specialty that often requires the expertise and input from various specialists, including obstetricians, perinatologists (also called maternal-fetal medicine specialists), neonatologists, pediatric cardiologists, pediatric surgical specialists, geneticists and others.

Radiology/ Sonogram

An Obstetrics Sonogram is one of the well-known uses of sonography for examining the foetus of a pregnant woman. Ultrasound scan is considered to be a safe, non-invasive, accurate and cost-effective investigation of the foetus. It has progressively become an indispensable obstetric tool and plays an important role in the care of every pregnant woman. This examination has many different indications such as to evaluate the position of the foetus, detect congenital abnormalities, multiple pregnancies and complications. OB ultrasound can be used in the early diagnosis and confirmation of pregnancy, assess gestational age, size and growth of the foetus.

A Gynaecology Sonogram evaluates organs found within the female pelvic region. It helps to identify ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, as well as ovarian and uterine masses. A pelvic sonogram can be done either transabdominally or transvaginally/endovaginal. Transvaginal ultrasound is performed very much like a gynecological examination and involves the insertion of the transducer into the vagina after the patient empties their bladder. A transvaginal ultrasound is usually performed to view the reproductive organs. Transvaginal ultrasound also affords a good way to evaluate the muscular walls and lining of the uterus.
