What Are the Various Tests Performed before undergoing IVF?

IVF Tests are done after the consultation with the doctor who takes a detailed history and advises you on what are your best options forward and any alternative tests that might be considered.

IVF tests can be divided into several categories.

  1. Ovarian Reserve Testing: It involves a few simple hormone blood tests which can give a doctor an idea of how many eggs are present in a women’s body. The hormones are Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Anti Mullerian Hormone (AMH), and Estradiol.AMH gives an idea of the number of eggs remaining while high FSH means a reducing ovarian reserve.
  2. Tubal Patency Test: HSG (Hystero salphingography). A Normal X-ray or ultrasound does not allow to properly evaluating the patency of fallopian tubes or the uterus. In HSG a contrast agent is inserted into the fallopian tube via uterus which allows the doctor to see the patency of fallopian tube and the inner lining of the uterus.
  3. Semen Evaluation: Total Count, Shape, Motility, and concentration of sperm are the basic parameters in semen evaluation. Depending on these parameters we can decide if the patient needs to undergo advanced treatments like ICSI (Intra Cytoplasm Sperm Injection) or simple methods like IUI.
  4. Prolactin and Thyroid Hormones: Prolactin is a key hormone required for the production of breast milk while the Thyroid hormone required for normal body metabolism. Abnormal levels of these hormones cause difficulty in conception. These need to be corrected with drugs.
  5. Screening of infectious diseases: The patient is screened for HIV, Hepatitis B, Syphilis, and Hepatitis C. All of these diseases could pose a risk to a growing fetus and could cause serious complications.
  6. Mock Embryo Transfer: This is a test done in order to gain a better knowledge of the uterus and the cervix in order to increase the success of IVF. It allows the doctor to identify the ideal route to use during the actual procedure. It also allows the doctor to understand how the uterus might behave during the actual procedure.

These are some important tests for IVF treatment to tie out the best treatment options for you. It is important to discuss with the doctor what tests need to be done and share your complete medical and family history. Based on the findings there may be a number of other tests that may be required. These tests ensure that you have the best possible chances of having a successful IVF but not a guarantee that the IVF procedure will be successful in your case.
