Department of Fetal Medicine
Fetal medicine, also known as maternal-fetal medicine (MFM), is a specialized branch of obstetrics that focuses on the health of the mother and Fetus during pregnancy. It deals with the diagnosis and management of high-risk pregnancies, particularly those involving medical, surgical, or genetic complications that could affect the health of the Fetus or the mother.
Fetal medicine specialists are trained in various aspects of prenatal diagnosis, fetal imaging and invasive procedures like amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS). They work closely with other healthcare professionals, including obstetricians, genetic counsellors, neonatologists, and paediatric specialists, to provide comprehensive care to pregnant women and their babies.
Common reasons for referral to a fetal medicine specialist include maternal medical conditions (such as diabetes or hypertension), fetal abnormalities detected on ultrasound, multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, etc.), advanced maternal age, and a history of pregnancy complications or birth defects.
The goal of fetal medicine is to monitor and manage high-risk pregnancies to optimize outcomes for both the mother and the baby, through advanced prenatal diagnosis, monitoring, and appropriate interventions when necessary.
In KINDER we have two fetal medicine specialists who are experts in all the advanced fetal scans, counselling and fetal interventions.
